1. How to Order
-
User registration is required to order.
2. Material Transfer Agreement (MTA)
-
A Material Transfer Agreement (MTA) must be fully executed before an order is shipped. The MTA defines the rights and obligations of both the provider and the recipient. The terms and conditions specified by the depositors should be followed. Some of the depositors require written consent. Our MTAs fall into two categories: Category I and Category II. Visit the following page and select the appropriate category for your organization and research purpose. The Category II is available for limited resources on the Web, but will be provided upon your request. Please note that MTAs are subject to change due to government policy.
3. Mailing Address
-
Experimental Plant Division
RIKEN BioResource Research Center
3-1-1 Koyadai, Tsukuba, Ibaraki 305-0074 JAPAN
4. Shipping
-
(1) Seed Stocks
Surface-sterilized seeds are contained in a sealed plastic tube. The tube is wrapped with a sealed plastic bag and finally placed in a small package lined with cushioning material. Seeds are shipped by registered airmail (e-packet) via Japan Post. Please note that the tagged line seeds are usually progeny of heterozygous plants unless otherwise stated in the catalog.
-
(2) DNA Clones
Individual DNA materials are shipped as lyophilized plasmid (approximately 100 ng) in a sealed plastic tube. The tube is wrapped in a sealed plastic bag and finally placed in a small package lined with cushioning material. The seeds are shipped by registered airmail (e-packet) via Japan Post.
-
(3) Plant Cell Cultures
Plant cell cultures are shipped by international carriers at the receiver’s expense.
- Note
Customs clearance is the responsibility of the recipient. Some countries require a phytosanitary certificate issued by the Japanese Plant Control Protection Organization or permission from your government to import seed materials. RIKEN BRC cannot guarantee any loss or damage that may occur during customs clearance. Please feel free to contact us at the email address if there are any permits or documents that should be included in or attached to the package before shipping your order. Other documents, such as a plant product description, will be made by negotiation, as they are sometimes different each time. When you receive the package, please carefully check what you have received and email us your receipt. If there is any problem found in the materials, please inform us immediately.
5. Quality Control
We distribute (1) individual Arabidopsis seeds, (2) Arabidopsis seed pool sets, (3) cDNA/EST clones, (4) plant cultured cells and (5) Brachypodium distachyon seeds. Each product is tested in order to ensure the reproducibility of experimental results.
(1) Individual Arabidopsis seeds
Information on genotype and phenotype data provided by the depositor/developer is shown in the web catalog.
Quality test at RIKEN BRC:
- Seed germination ratio (if more than 3 years have elapsed since the last test)
- Confirmation of insertion site (transposon-tagged line) or DNA sequence of genes (over-expresser/anti-sense mutant)
- Genotyping with SSR markers (if new lot of natural accession is generated)
Not Performed:
- Full length nucleotide sequencing of insert DNA in transgenic lines
(2) Arabidopsis seed pool sets
Information on genotype and phenotype data provided by the depositor/developer is displayed in the web catalog.
Quality test at RIKEN BRC:
- Germination ratio of seeds (if more than 3 years have passed since last examination)
Not Performed:
- Analysis of insertion site and sequence of transgenic lines
(3) cDNA/EST clones
Information on nucleotide sequence and other properties obtained by the depositor/developer is shown in the web catalog.
Quality test at RIKEN BRC:
- Sequencing of 5′- and/or 3′-end of insert DNA
Not Performed:
- Full length nucleotide sequencing of insert DNA
(4) Plant cultured cells
Information on maintenance procedure, insert DNA (if any) and other characteristics provided by the depositor/developer are shown in the web catalog.
Quality test at RIKEN BRC:
- Genotyping of cells to confirm their species of origin(once every year)

Not Performed:
- Characterization of biosynthetic ability of target materials (if any)
(5) Brachypodium distachyon seeds
Quality test at RIKEN BRC:
- Germination rate of seeds (if more than 3 years have passed since the last test)
Not Performed:
- Genotyping of seeds

Notes:
1. For distribution within Japan, add sales tax. For overseas distribution, add a conversion fee or similar fee equivalent to the amount of sales tax for domestic distribution.
2. “For use in research for not-for-profit academic purpose” refers to the use of bioresources by a not-for-profit organization for not-for-profit academic purposes. Use a Category I MTA in these instances.
◆“Not-for-profit organizations” refers to universities, national/public research institutes (including independent administrative agencies), technical colleges, public interest foundations, medical corporations,
and educational institutions (including vocational schools).
◆“For-profit organizations” refers to private companies, corporations, or similar, as well as research institutes not listed above.
3. “For use in research for profit-research purpose” refers to the use of bioresources in any of the examples outlined below. Use a Category II MTA in these instances.
・For research to be conducted by a for-profit organization
・For collaborative research between a for-profit organization and a not-for-profit organization
・For research by a not-for-profit organization which is outsourced and sponsored by a for-profit organization
・For for-profit research and development by a not-for-profit organization (including for R&D with the aim of patent acquisition)
4. Add the cost of shipping as well as the cost of packaging materials and containers.
5. Orders of 10-19 vials at one time by a single user receive a 10% discount on distribution fees. Orders of 20 vials or more receive a 20% discount on distribution fees.

7. How to pay
-
BRC invoices are emailed to you when we are ready to ship, often after performing quality control.
Your payment ensures that the Experimental Plant Division will ship your order.
8. Terms of Use
Please read the following terms. You are deemed to accept them by placing your order.
(1) Possible cases for compensation and reporting period
| Cases for compensation | Report deadline (after the shipping date) |
|---|---|
| ①Resource undelivered, damaged container, etc. | within 14 days |
| ②Impaired seed germination, impaired proliferation etc. | within 30 days |
| ③Unable to confirm the properties of the bioresource described in the catalog, etc. | Seeds and cells: within 6 months Genes: within 3 months |
If you experience any of the above cases, please notify the Experimental Plant Division (plant.brc@riken.jp) by the applicable deadline. We will take immediate action.
(2) Conditions and limitations on compensation
If you report us a case of ①, ② or ③ to us before the specified deadline, we will replace the resource you ordered with the same or an alternative resource free of charge once, issue a credit (the right to request the same or an equivalent strain whenever necessary in the future, if no resource is needed at the moment), or refund you. The refund will not exceed the distribution fee. Overseas users will be charged for shipping costs for replacement. We do not compensate in case of failure or damage caused by the users.
(3) Cancellation fee
After we receive an order from a user, we begin to prepare the requested resource through the necessary processes. These preparations are very costly. If a user cancels the order at the user’s convenience, the user will be charged for the costs we have incurred in preparation up to the time that the cancellation is notified (up to 100% of the distribution fee). If the cancellation is notified after the BRC has shipped the resource, the user will be charged100% of the distribution fee plus shipping costs.
